Delonghi Dinamica Plus vs Philips Lattego 5400: they are in the same price segment, but the former proves to be significantly superior.

I was impressed with the wide range of one-touch drinks the Delonghi Dinamica Plus offers, including the unique “TrueBrew Over Ice” option. By the way, you should know that this one can also be controlled from a distance for remote espresso preparation.

The Philips Lattego 5400 is also a lightweight and user-friendly machine, considering its price range. It doesn’t have many luxury bells and whistles, but it features enough tools to give you delicious caffeinated drinks.

Delonghi Dinamica Plus Vs Philips Lattego 5400: Differences

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus put down the Philips Lattego with a 3-2 win. Here is my detailed comparison to help you choose the one that best suits your lifestyle!

Coffee Flavour

Winner: Delonghi Dinamica Plus

Built-in Grinder

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus features a stainless steel conical burr grinder, whereas the Philips Lattego 5400 has a 100% ceramic burr grinder. That means you don’t need to spend money on a separate grinder, and your caffeinated drinks are always brewed from freshly ground beans. Better yet, these burr grinders yield finer grinds than the blade ones since they crush the beans instead of chopping them, resulting in better extraction.

One thing that the ceramic grinder has over its stainless steel counterpart is that it doesn’t conduct heat as effectively, which helps prevent the coffee beans from overheating during the grinding process. This is beneficial for maintaining the flavor and aromatic compounds in the coffee grounds.

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus has 13 grind settings, while there are 12 settings on the Philips 5400 for you to choose from. So just experiment by turning a dial inside the bean hopper until you are happy with your espresso. Oh, and I recommend steering clear of oily coffee beans to prevent potential grinder blockages and brew group issues.

Heating System

These bad boys have a single fast-heating thermoblock boiler, which means they can’t brew espresso and steam milk for frothing simultaneously. Instead, there is a delay for them to switch between these functions, making them not the most efficient choice for large settings where there’s a need to prepare multiple drinks quickly and continuously.

If you’re a home brewer eyeing just a couple of cups of coffee or milk-infused drinks daily, these single thermoblock boiler machines might suffice. This can rapidly heat water to the required temperature for each task (for about 20 seconds). So you don’t have to wait too long for your morning coffee or velvety cappuccino.

Both also feature a warming tray on top that is used to pre-heat up to a pair of sizable cups to keep your espresso at the ideal temperature while frothing milk. It is heated passively by the boiler and is just somewhat warm instead of really hot, but half a loaf is better than no bread, right?

Brewing System

Their extraction process begins with the pre-infusion stage. As its name suggests, this infuses the coffee grounds with hot water before the full extraction process begins, creating a consistent and balanced extraction and avoiding over- or under-extraction.

In the realm of espresso extraction, pressure is a critical factor that significantly influences the quality and characteristics of the final espresso shot. Delonghi Dinamica Plus vs Philips Lattego 5400 extract coffee at a maximum pressure of up to 19 and 15 bars, respectively, far exceeding the minimum pressure requirement of 9 bars needed to achieve a proper espresso shot.

I found the Dinamica Plus to produce balanced and complex espresso adorned with a rich, creamy crema top layer. The only issue was that it was too hot to taste immediately, requiring a moment to cool down for optimal enjoyment. The Philips Lattego 5400’s espresso was just okay, though, but it wasn’t the same quality and feel as a barista-crafted one.

Milk Frothing System

These bean-to-cup machines froth milk automatically, enabling you to make a cappuccino or a variety of other milk-based drinks right in your kitchen with zero barista skills. Everything is so easy that the hardest part is deciding what to drink today. Still, they automatically pour the milk, so making latte art is totally impossible.

Delonghi Dinamica Plus vs Philips Lattego 5400’s milk frothing systems

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus’s milk frothing system is called LatteCrema, which includes a thermal milk jug. Whenever you need to prepare a milky drink, the display will instruct you to remove the hot water spigot and attach the integrated milk container to the front of the machine. You can choose one of three levels of milk froth (none, min, or max) by turning a dial on top of the carafe.

Then, once you’re done, the milk pitcher can and should be stored in your refrigerator when not in use to keep the milk fresh and cool. I found it a bit difficult to take the spout or container off the machine, and it needed a fair amount of strength. Anyway, I still loved this setup: no tubes, hoses, or extra countertop space needed.

The Philips 5400’s Lattego system also follows the same approach, but the milk pitcher needs to be firmly secured to a holder or it will spill, leading to extra cleanup work. The top lid is quite flimsy since there’s no rubber or hinge to hold it in place. The milk container has some markings to tell you exactly how much milk you should use for a specific milk drink. This feature is commendable, but these markings are almost invisible, diminishing its practicality. I mean, why don’t they have a more prominent color?

the philips 5400's lattego carafe has some hard-to-see markings
The Philips 5400’s Lattego carafe has some hard-to-see markings

As with most automatic milk frothing machines, they only did a great job of producing thick, frothy milk rather than the microfoam needed for a nice flat white. So if you’re a die-hard flat-white drinker, you might get a little frustrated with them.

Design & Usability

Both are mainly made of plastic, but they still feel robust, leading me to believe they’ll endure over the years – Of course, only time can truly confirm this. There are some steel or chrome accents to give them a premium feel but still keep costs down. They’re not huge like Godzilla, but they’re pretty heavy, so putting them in place might require a bit of help.

As for the control panel, the Delonghi Dinamica Plus features a 3.5-inch smartphone-like touchscreen display, a notable upgrade from the text screens seen on earlier DeLonghi machines, such as the Dinamica or Eletta. The Philips 5400 also has a modernized display with clear labels that are contemporary yet approachable for those not so tech-inclined.

Considering they are designed for home use, they have a lot of drinks that can be prepared with one touch. Both feature a bypass chute for the use of pre-ground coffee, which is a good option when you run out of coffee beans or your guests are in the mood for a decaf drink. Also, they have a hot water function for quick tea brewing.

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus stands apart from its rival with patented TrueBrew Over Ice “cold brew” technology. Interestingly, you will have to pay a lot of money to get the same function on the Jura Z10. It’s worth noting that it doesn’t actually generate cold coffee by itself. It instead pre-infuses and brews espresso at a lower temperature, yielding a delightful room-temperature shot. Then you can add some ice cubes or whiskey rocks (to prevent dilution) for the perfect summertime refreshment.

The flavor of your coffee depends not only on the coffee bean you use, of course, but also on grind size, aroma strength selected, brewing temperature, and the coffee-to-milk ratio. It’s great that there are so many customizable settings to play around with to pinpoint the perfect flavor profile for your palate.

The Delonghi Dinamica Plus offers 4 user profiles, while the Philips 5400 has 5 – all are differentiated by different colors rather than by name. You might initially consider them less useful in larger settings, but remember, these machines are specifically designed with home users in mind.

It is no surprise or shock to know that they have a height-adjustable dispensing spout, which is almost standard for automatic coffee makers. The Philips Lattego 5400 clearly can accommodate a wider range of cup sizes, but the Dinamica Plus isn’t far behind and can also fit some oversized ones.

You can also put two cups under their dual spout and get two espresso-based drinks at once. In fact, they can make a true double shot by adding extra coffee grounds, ensuring that both cups receive the full flavor and concentration of a proper espresso shot. Meanwhile, many other machines just push more water through the same coffee grounds, leading to a bitter flavor.

Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper

Their 1.8-liter removable water containers are neither particularly large nor small for home use. As long as you’re not a guy who always has a cup of Joe on hand, a single reload per day should suffice. Their front-reaching design ensures that removing them for a refill is child’s play.

High-quality, impurity-free water is pivotal for the perfect espresso, but it’s frequently underrated. To ensure this, the Delonghi Dinamica Plus vs Philips Lattego 5400 come with a De’longhi filter and an AquaClean water filter, respectively. Whether you use the filter or not is up to you, but I would say that unless you use bottled water, the absence of the filter will hasten limescale accumulation. This affects not only your espresso’s taste but also the machine’s efficiency.

They can further guarantee the taste of espresso with an airtight cover. By preventing your precious beans from coming into contact with the outside elements, the beans’ aroma is preserved for a longer duration, ensuring your coffee always tastes great. As a bonus, it helps dampen the grinder’s noise.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Winner: Tie

Their brew groups are removable, which is a major perk in my eyes rather than a con. Yes, that means you need to manually clean an extra part, but for me, it’s the most reliable way to sanitize a brew unit. In addition, you can easily replace it yourself should any issues arise without any specialized skills or tools.

Removable brew group

There are also some other removable parts that need to be cleaned manually under running water, such as the drip tray, used coffee grounds basket, and water container. Keep this in your brain: keep them away from your dishwasher.

Regarding the milk system, both will automatically run a cleaning cycle to get rid of any milk residue. To maintain optimal hygiene, it’s recommended to rinse the milk pitchers under running water or place them in a dishwasher every few days.

Descaling these machines also relies on an automatic cycle, and all you need to do is pour the recommended descaling solution into the water tank and put the machine into automatic descaling mode. Using the water filter will reduce the frequency of descaling the machine.

Utilities & Other Features

Winner: Delonghi Dinamica Plus

Remote Control

Brewing espresso from a distance? Well, that sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but that’s something you can really do with the Delonghi Dinamica Plus and many super-automatics for Jura.

By connecting the Delonghi Dinamica Plus to your smartphone via the Delonghi Coffee Link app, you can choose the drink, change the settings, and initiate the extraction process – All without leaving your couch or pausing your favorite film. Just ensure you put a cup underneath its spigot before.

However, it’s not really helpful when preparing a milk-based drink. You will still need to fetch the milk container from the fridge, attach it to the machine, and dial in the right milk froth level. However, you can choose the amount of milk in seconds via the app, which you can’t do with its control panel.

Auto Shut Off

If you are a guy or gal who often inadvertently increases your monthly electric bill because you frequently forget to turn off appliances before leaving the house. You can program these machines to power off automatically after an adjustable period of time, ranging from 15 to 180 minutes.
