Should you find yourself grappling with the choice between the Delonghi ECP3620 vs ECP3420 espresso machines, I’m here to lend a hand by shedding light on their distinctions and similarities.

Both machines belong to the De’Longhi ECP series, known for their compact size and budget-friendly nature. They boast identical features and performance. The sole disparity lies in their aesthetics (color). However, I still vote for De’Longhi ECP3420 because it is more reliable and easier to find.

Of course, the De’Longhi ECP3620 stands as an equal contender alongside the De’Longhi ECP3420. If you like a silver color that grants a robust metal-like appearance, then you can choose it.

Delonghi ECP3620 vs ECP3420: Differences

With a final score of 1-0 and 1 draw, the ECP3420 emerges as the victor in this debate. It all comes down to a single factor that led me to cast my vote in favor of the Delonghi ECP3420. Keep reading to delve into the details.

Appearance

The Winner: Tie

The frame of the De’Longhi ECP3420 is crafted from plastic and stainless steel. The front side is covered with metal plates, making it much sturdier, while the sides are made of durable plastic. This creates a color scheme that combines black with shiny metallic touches.

The De’Longhi ECP3620 showcases a complete silver finish. It looks like it is made of stainless steel. Yet, upon closer examination, its body doesn’t consist entirely of metal; rather, it’s crafted from plastic and coated with silver-hued paint. The front side also is steel just like the ECP3420.

This revelation leads me to consider both the ECP3420 and ECP3620 as essentially siblings of the same model, differentiated solely by their color. It’s quite a conundrum for me to definitively declare one color as superior to the other, given that the choice hinges entirely on personal preferences and what aligns best with the aesthetics of one’s kitchen.

But in terms of materials, I am not really satisfied with both of these machines. Some individuals might find plastic to impart a less premium, less sturdy sensation compared to metal. However, the materials and overall construction don’t lean towards being fragile or excessively inexpensive in appearance. In fact, they still have a rather robust build. Plus, it’s important to remember that these coffee machines come at a very budget-friendly price point, thanks to the smart utilization of cost-effective materials.

Reliability

The Winner: Delonghi ECP3420

The ECP3420 has garnered a substantial number of purchases on platforms like Amazon, where numerous users have shared their experiences and provided feedback attesting to its reality quality.

Strangely, it is quite a challenge to find a new machine of the ECP3620 on the market. This scarcity raises questions about its appeal, with fewer individuals opting for this variant. As a result, it has less user feedback. Given this context, I consider it a somewhat risky choice. We don’t know if it is reliable or not or after a while of use does it work anymore or stop working.

In the end, the top and most secure pick is still the Delonghi ECP3420 – a tried-and-true model.

Delonghi ECP3620 vs ECP3420: Similarities

Apart from the previously mentioned distinction, the Delonghi ECP3620 and ECP3420 are indeed similar in all other aspects.

Coffee Flavor & Brewing Technology

Pump Pressure

In the realm of pump espresso machines, it is better to find one that has pressure levels between 9 and 15 bars. Notably, these machines boast an impressive pump pressure of 15 bars.

However, when I actually used them, I noticed that the pressure could be a bit weak sometimes. And you know what happens when the pressure isn’t up to snuff? It means those coffee beans don’t really get to give their all in terms of flavor. That translates to getting a cup of joe that’s a bit on the milder side and tepid. And the crema layer, to be honest, is rather mediocre.

Additionally, the pressure or steam that comes out of the frothing wand is alright, but it doesn’t pack enough punch to help me achieve that satisfying “swirl” milk. Getting a smooth silky microfoam turns out to be a bit of a challenge.

Boiler

Nobody wants to twiddle their thumbs for half an hour while their espresso machine warms up, especially on hectic mornings. Thankfully, these machines come equipped with a stainless steel boiler that heats up swiftly, sparing you the waiting game.

DeLonghi suggests allocating 15 minutes for these machines to preheat. But the good news is, with these machines, you can expect the READY light to start blinking within a much shorter time, typically ranging from 5 to 7 minutes. They usually require a quick 30 seconds to 1 minute to heat up again for the next cup.

A stainless steel boiler doesn’t heat up quite as quickly as a Thermoblock. Additionally, it’s important to highlight that they operate with a single boiler rather than dual boilers. Nevertheless, considering the price point, I have no qualms whatsoever about these aspects.

Portafilter

De'Longhi ECP3620 and ECP3420's 3-in-1 pressurized portafilter
De’Longhi ECP3620 and ECP3420’s 3-in-1 pressurized portafilter

Both models offer a versatile 3-in-1 pressurized portafilter. In a nutshell, this portafilter allows you to brew both a single shot, double shots or even experiment with ESE pods.

Getting the portafilter screwed into the espresso brew head can be tricky. To secure it, I have to press down on top of the machine while locking it. But the top of the machine serves as a cup warmer, so it seems like the design wasn’t exactly well thought out in this regard.

Design

Dimensions & Weight

Delonghi ECP3620 and ECP3420 are really compact. With dimensions of 9.6 x 7.25 x 11.9 inches, they sport a space-efficient design that perfectly fits the confines of a petite counter. Their predominantly plastic construction and compact build result in a weight of just around 10 pounds.

Water Tank

De’Longhi ECP3620 vs ECP3420: Water tank

Their water tank has a capacity of 37 ounces of water. You may find it small but I think capacity strikes a good balance considering their compact dimensions. The tank is removable, simplifying and enhancing the overall convenience of refilling and cleaning.

I must also commend the inclusion of a water level indicator on the front of the machine, eliminating the need for guesswork.

But here’s the thing that got me a bit down: the plastic they used for the water tank isn’t great, and it can sometimes give your coffee a bit of a plastic smell in initial cups. I did tackle this by tossing the tank into the dishwasher before its first use, and I have to say, things got a lot better.

User Interface

De'Longhi ECP3620 and ECP3420's user interface
De’Longhi ECP3620 and ECP3420’s user interface

For all beginners out there, you’re in for a treat with their straightforward user interface. There is a big dial right on the front that controls the espresso brewing process, frothing process and turns on the machine. And there’s one knob on the side that you can twist for using the manual steam wand.

There are also two indicator lights on the panel. One of them tells you the machine’s powered up, while the other one signals it’s done preheating and ready to brew.

Steam Wand

They come equipped with a manual Panarello wand. Although the quality might not be sky-high, half a loaf is better than none. It’s a rare find to encounter machines within the same price category that come with the milk frother.

However, the downside is that we don’t have much control over the air injection, resulting in a slightly thick milk froth. This is fine for a cappuccino. The milk doesn’t quite get the chance to heat up fully before it starts frothing over. This makes achieving the desired velvety microfoam for a latte a rather tough task.

To fix this, I’d recommend considering the ECP3630 model, which comes with a more advanced milk system. This upgraded system provides you with options for both ‘cappuccino’ and ‘hot milk’.
