For those desiring a straightforward and reasonably priced coffee machine from Jura, the Jura C65 vs D6 are both suitable choices. Choosing between them can be hard. But, in my honest opinion, the Jura D6 is better than its counterpart and clearly stands out as the winner.

The reason I vote for the Jura D6 over the C65 is that, firstly, its Aroma G2 grinder has impressive performance. It is not just faster but also quieter. Moreover, it can connect to a Smart app, making everything even easier and more enjoyable. And the best part is it allows me to make my favorite cappuccino easily with pre-programmed touch.

As a runner-up, the Jura C65 is also worth buying. It matches the D6 in terms of drink capacity and quality. What sets it apart is the convenient bypass doser that the D6 lacks, allowing users to enjoy pre-ground coffee. However, finding a new Jura D65 can be quite challenging now since the company has ceased its production and is replaced by the introduction of the Jura D6.

Jura C65 vs D6: Differences

In the face-off between Jura C65 and D6, Jura D6 emerged as the clear winner with a score of 2-0 and 1 draw. It outshines its counterpart with superior grinder performance, a more convenient design, and a more extensive selection of coffee drinks. However, it falls short in one aspect by lacking a bypass doser for pre-ground coffee.

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

The Winner: Jura D6

Grinder

The Jura D6 ingeniously elevates the stainless steel conical burr grinder from its predecessor, the Jura C65, by introducing the remarkable Aroma G2 grinder. While not claiming the title of Jura’s most advanced grinder, the Aroma G2 still outperforms the C65’s counterpart with impressive finesse.

The Jura D6’s grinder has an impressive noise reduction and achieves higher consistency when grinding coffee beans, compared to the grinder of Jura C65. But don’t expect it to be completely silent like a whisper, but it’s not like a roar, instead, its loudness will be like a conversation.

If you seek a remarkably quiet machine, one that won’t disturb the tranquility of your family’s early mornings, then setting your sights on models like the Jura ENA 8, equipped with the serene Aroma G3 grinder, would be an excellent choice.

Grind Settings

Are you aware that even a minor adjustment in the grind size can entirely alter the taste of your coffee brew? That’s why I’ve always yearned for a coffee machine with a diverse range of grinding settings. The principle is simple: for a stronger cup of coffee, adjust to finer grounds, whereas a coarser grind will yield a lighter coffee.

Unfortunately, these coffee machines only offer a limited selection of 5 grind settings. For me, I can find my sweet spot, or for beginners, they may not notice the difference between various grind levels, so the number of settings above is enough. However, for those with a wealth of experience and a discerning palate, you will certainly desire more flexibility in grind size.

Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.)

Previously, one of Jura’s more budget-friendly coffee machines, the Jura C65, was not equipped with the Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.). To enjoy this feature, one had to opt for a higher-priced machine. Anyway, that makes sense!

However, with the introduction of the Jura D6, there came a generous surprise from Jura as they equipped this model with the coveted P.E.P. And this decision, without a doubt, convinced me to give the Jura D6 my edge.

When you brew a short espresso with the Jura D6, this remarkable P.E.P. springs into action. It engages turbo mode, propelling hot water through the coffee puck in rapid bursts, thereby unlocking the coffee’s full flavor potential.

Based on my personal experience, I can confidently assure you that this feature in the Jura D6 elevates the espresso’s taste to new heights. I found its espresso deeper, richer, and more flavorful. Moreover, it delivers a coveted thick layer of crema that every espresso enthusiast desires.

Design & Convenience

The Winner: Jura D6

The design of Jura C65 and D6 is remarkably similar. As I mentioned earlier, the Jura D6 serves as the updated version, replacing the now-discontinued Jura C65. I will discuss the specific similarities in a later separate section.

As for the difference, you can easily recognize a difference in the design that is in their spouts. Furthermore, when you delve deeper into exploration, you’ll also find that the Jura D6 is more convenient than the Jura C65 in terms of brewing the drinks options.

Spout & Cup Clearance

Spout

Jura C65 and D6 feature a dual coffee spout, allowing you to brew two cups of joe simultaneously. However, they only have one single milk spout, so they can’t make two cups of milk-based drinks at the same time as the Jura X8 model. It is not surprising, given their respective price tags.

Furthermore, there’s a slight difference in the position of the milk spout between the Jura C65 and D6. With the Jura D6, you can easily make milk-based beverages without moving your cup since both the coffee and milk spouts are located next to each other. However, if you were to use a smaller cup, you might still need to move it slightly. Conversely, on the C65, the milk spout is on the right side of the machine, situated a few inches away from the coffee spout. So, no matter what size cup you use, you have to move the cup. Yet, regardless of their positioning, the milk or milk foam’s quality remains consistent.

Cup Clearance

You will find their spout’s ability to lower to a minimum of 64mm brings significant benefits to the espresso-brewing experience. It effectively prevents splashes and helps retain the rich crema layer on top of the espresso. A feature that truly deserves my appreciation.

Contrastingly, their maximum clearance stands at a mere 110mm, posing a challenge for my taller latte glasses to fit under the spout. I manage to wriggle them under the spout, making it work somehow. Still, I really want a taller space that can fit my taller glasses more comfortably.

The cup clearance under the milk spout holds paramount importance in my milk-based drinks journey. In this aspect, the Jura D6 performs better than the C65. I like using tall glasses for my lattes, but the fixed milk spout height of the Jura C65 poses a challenge. This is why I appreciate the Jura D6 more, as it allows me to adjust the milk spout’s height, making it easier to use my preferred tall glasses. We can place the tall cup on the side of the machine and slightly tilting the spout, as shown in the picture. It also works. However, it may be a bit inconvenient compared to the ideal setup with an adjustable milk spout.

If you’re looking for simple coffee drinks, the C65 or D6 might be just what you need. However, if you seek a machine that provides the convenience of many additional preset drink options, I must caution that these two products might not fully meet your expectations. They offer only espresso and coffee.

With both the C65 and D6 machines, we have the flexibility to fine-tune various parameters to suit our taste preferences. Tune the temperature to our liking with 2 settings, choose from 4 coffee strength levels, and adjust our beverage’s volume.

Jura D6 goes above and beyond by featuring a basic milk-based option: the Cappuccino. While the Jura C65 lacks the preset for cappuccinos, lattes, or other milk-based beverages.

The C65 still allows you to create milk-based drinks as well. However, the process is manual compared to the convenience of one-touch buttons. First, you have to froth the milk using the auto frother. Afterward, you can prepare your espresso and combine it with the frothed milk or vice versa to craft your desired milk-based beverages.

Utilities

User Interface

Jura D6's user interface
Jura D6’s user interface

The Jura C65 and D6 share an almost identical user interface, sporting a simple setup with two dials. Among them, the dial on the left is a rotary switch serving as the primary control. This dial allows you to navigate the menu, select and personalize your coffee drinks. All these essential details are elegantly presented in a plain text display. Meanwhile, on the right-hand side, the other dial is used to open and close the fine foam frother. In contrast to the other user-friendly color display of Jura machines, this type of user interface may prove less intuitive and convenient.

App Compatibility

If you find the user interface of the Jura C65 and Jura D6 controls to be less than intuitive and inconvenient, there is a workaround available. By purchasing the separate Jura Smart Connect transmitter, you can control everything from your phone, tablet, or even your Apple Watch.

However, it’s important to note that this feature is exclusively available for the Jura D6. Regrettably, the Jura C65 is not compatible with the Jura App.

Bypass Doser

My disappointment knew no bounds when I realized that the top bypass area of the Jura D6 doesn’t accommodate ground coffee; instead, it is solely meant for cleaning tablets.

In contrast, I can use the bypass in the Jura C65 for enjoying decaf in the evenings or experimenting with new pre-ground coffee. It truly baffles me why the Jura engineers made the decision to remove the bypass doser for pre ground on Jura D6. It’s a missed opportunity in the design of the Jura D6, and it leaves me wondering about the reasoning behind this change.

Jura C65 vs D6: Similarities

Heating System

The Jura C65 and E6 share a common single Thermoblock heating system. As a result, these machines are unable to brew coffee and steam milk simultaneously, leading to a brief delay between these two processes. While this can be slightly inconvenient, it’s essential to consider that both machines are affordable and specifically designed for household use.

In reality, the delay is not overly lengthy, lasting only a matter of seconds, thanks to the efficiency of the Thermoblock technology. While it may not be ideal for quickly preparing multiple milk-based drinks, the single boiler setup is not a significant drawback for most users due to its rapid heating capabilities.

For those with limited kitchen space, this coffee machine is a perfect fit, as it’s thoughtfully designed to occupy minimal countertop real estate. With its box-like appearance, it gracefully and neatly sits atop surfaces.

Moreover, one aspect I truly admire is the robust stainless steel construction of both the Jura C65 and D6. This feature not only guarantees their long-lasting performance but also simplifies the cleaning process after each use. The use of rust-proof materials imparts a dazzling and luxurious appearance.

Water Tank & Bean Hopper

Bean hopper capacity7 oz7 oz
Coffee grounds container capacity16 pucks16 pucks

On the left side of the machine, you’ll discover a removable water tank boasting the same capacity for both the Jura C65 and D6. Moreover, their bean hopper, and coffee grounds container also share identical capacities.

Flexibility is at your fingertips when it comes to refilling the tank – either take it out and refill it at the sink or easily fill it right in the machine. Whichever method you prefer, be sure to keep the included Claris Blue water filter, as it guarantees the delightful taste of your coffee while sparing you from the hassle of frequent descaling. Although periodic filter replacement may incur a slight cost, it’s a small trade-off for an elevated coffee experience.

Speaking of the bean hopper, it holds around 7 ounces of beans, which might seem a tad smaller than other hoppers, but it still serves me well. With my daily coffee consumption of 4-5 cups, a fully loaded hopper sustains me for 2-3 days before needing a refill. Not too bad, right?

Milk System

For the skilled foam artists seeking to create their own milk foam, the D6 and Jura C65 may not be the ideal choice as they excel in hands-free auto milk frothing but lack features for manual foaming.

However, if convenience is what you crave and you’re a cappuccino lover on the go, both the D6 and C65 make for solid options. You’ll enjoy the benefits of dense foam, although it’s essential to note that there’s no option to adjust the froth level to your preference. For their dense foam, I feel it is good enough for a cappuccino.
