Jura ENA Micro 1 vs 5: Differences

The design and usability of their coffee spout is the only significant difference between Jura ENA Micro 1 vs 5. So there will be no winner in this match, only which suits your needs better.

Coffee Spout & Cup Clearance

The Jura ENA Micro 5 has impressed me with its innovative rotating dual spout, allowing me to brew one or two cups of specialty coffee with unparalleled ease. The sheer uniqueness of this rotating design is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered in other machines, truly setting it apart. This unprecedented rotating design has left me in awe, as I have never seen on any other machine.

Gone are the days of spousal battles over who uses the coffee machine first in the morning. This feature allows me to brew two cups simultaneously with a simple rotation of the spout, a true time-saving advantage that perfectly suits my busy mornings as I prepare to head to work.

If time isn’t of the essence, and you have the leisure of brewing 2 or more cups respectively, the Jura ENA Micro 1’s single spout that only caters to one drink at a time shouldn’t pose much discomfort.

As for me, the beauty of these spouts lies in their height-adjustable ability, sparing me the need for a designated espresso cup for these machines. The Jura ENA Micro 1 boasts a flexible spout that adjusts from 2 to 5.6 inches, while the Micro 5 offers a range of 1.2 to 4.4 inches. Whether I use a dainty espresso cup or a taller travel mug, both machines graciously accommodate my every cup size.

Jura ENA Micro 1 vs 5: Similars

As I said, Jura ENA Micro 1 vs 5 has more similarities than differences. I advise you to continue reading as I will not only review them but also share valuable insights garnered from my usage.

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

Grinder

Utilizing an adjustable integrated grinder equipped with conical burrs, these machines operate quietly so you can enjoy freshly ground coffee in the morning without disturbing the entire household.

However, they offer only 4 grind size settings, which might not be sufficient for some coffee enthusiasts. Those with a penchant for espresso might find the finest setting to be coarser than desired, not allow to achieve a strong espresso.

If you don’t find any joy in brewing the coffee by grind the whole bean, you can skip the bean hopper as the bypass doser comes to the rescue, offering the convenience of using pre-ground coffee. It grants you a wide array of coffee choices, including the decaf options.

Heating System

The Jura ENA Micro 1 and ENA Micro 5 both feature a Thermoblock single boiler system. One boiler is enough as it only needs to heat up the water for only the brewing process.

The performance of the Thermoblock heating system on the Jura machines is truly exceptional, leaving no room for debate. The thermoblock heats up the water in less than a minute. From there, it wastes no time brewing, completing the entire process within 2 minutes.

Coffee Flavor

With the Jura ENA Micro 1 and ENA Micro 5 solely dedicated to crafting coffee, espresso, and ristretto without a built-in milk system, one might wonder if their concentrated efforts in perfecting these beverages lead to ultimate satisfaction or not.

I can confidently attest that they consistently deliver exceptional brewing results, comparable to Starbucks’ renowned quality, if not surpassing it. They also produce a delightful crema—a sure sign of a well-brewed, expertly extracted shot.

However, the temperature of the drink might not be sufficiently hot for certain preferences. If you pour an espresso into a room-temperature mug, it should be consumed within a brief 2-minute window after serving; otherwise, it will only retain a lukewarm temperature.

To ensure your coffee reaches the desired scalding hotness, I advise you to exercise a little patience and allow the machine some time to warm up before brewing. This can make a noticeable difference in the coffee’s temperature, ensuring a hotter and more gratifying experience for those who relish their coffee piping hot.

Design & Usability

Jura ENA Micro 1 vs 5 have a small footprint on the countertop only 9.0 inches wide, 12.7 inches tall and 17.5 inches deep.

Sporting a black and sleek plastic frame, these models infuse my kitchen with an elegant look. While I appreciate the stylish front panel, I can’t help but admit that a gleaming aluminum finish would have been my personal preference.

The shiny black plastic, though visually appealing, turned out to be quite susceptible to scratches, making its appearance less pristine within just a few weeks. Furthermore, it seems to have a knack for attracting fingerprints and streaks, I have ro frequent cleaning to maintain its chic allure.

Water Tank & Bean Hopper

Jura ENA Micro 1Jura ENA Micro 5
Water Tank Capacity37.2 oz37.2 oz
Bean Hopper Capacity4.4 oz4.4 oz
Coffee Grounds Container Capacity9 servings9 servings

They feature a 37-ounce water tank located at the back, which I consider on the smaller side. This water tank capacity is only sufficient for a family of one or two coffee drinkers.

However, the water serves multiple purposes, being used not only for brewing your coffee but also for the auto-rinse process. As a result, these machines can be quite water-intensive, and with their limited capacity, I need to refill the tank regularly. The tank is conveniently accessible from the top, making refilling a breeze.

When filling the water, exercise caution as the tank is positioned right next to the bean hopper, which may result in water splashing on it. If this is a concern, removing the tank for refilling is the safest approach.

When you receive these machines, it comes with one filter that you’ll need to install. I highly recommend using the filter from the first and replacing it when it’s time. Because the filter effectively removes the limescale-causing minerals that may be present in your tap water, thus eliminating the need for frequent descaling.

Their bean hopper is relatively small, capable of holding just 4.4 oz of coffee beans. To maintain the pinnacle flavor of coffee beans, I only fill the hopper with enough beans for one day’s use.

But if you keep the coffee beans for 3-4 days, it’s just okay because the bean hopper comes with an aroma preservation cover, creating an airtight seal, ensuring the coffee beans remain fresh and aromatic

Utilities

User Interface

Operating these machines is a breeze, as they are equipped with a symbol-based control panel that requires just a simple touch of a button. This touch-sensitive and intuitive icon-based interface ensures that anyone can effortlessly navigate and master its usage.

Within the control panel, you’ll find 5 glowing red emblems, 2 for adjusting coffee strength and 3 for pre-programmed beverage options, the others are indicator ones. A word of caution: the buttons are highly sensitive and only require minimal pressure, necessitating a gentle touch.

Auto Rinse

I appreciate that these machines automatically rinse when turning on and off. To manage the water drainage during these processes, we simply place a cup under the spout to prevent the tray from getting too full.

I did come across some reviews mentioning that the first cup of espresso appeared quite watery, and it wasn’t until the second cup that the brew resembled true “espresso.” I think this may be due to users not changing the cup after the auto rinse process when turning on the machine.

During every brewing session, I need to be attentive and quick to position the brewing cup under the coffee spout immediately after the first amount of water comes out. While it’s not always possible to avoid collecting some drops of watery coffee before the regular espresso starts flowing.

Auto Shut-off

I absolutely love the energy-saving feature of the Jura ENA Micro 1 and ENA Micro 5. After 30 minutes of inactivity, these machines automatically switch off. Not only does it help conserve energy, but it also gives me peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to worry about turning off the machine manually if I get caught up in other tasks.
