It takes me so much work to determine the winner of Nespresso Essenza Mini vs Citiz. But after many considerations, I think the De’Longhi Nespresso Essenza Mini performs significantly better after many brewing sessions.
The Delonghi Nespresso Essenza Mini fits on top of any small tabletop because of its extremely small footprint. It extracts aromatic, delicious espressos that have a strong scent. I also like this model’s Eco mode. I advise those living alone or in tiny studios to spend on this compact device.
Delonghi Nespresso Citiz also is a stable espresso maker with consistent flavor performance. I can’t say anything bad about the espresso quality. But, the device leaks a little bit after brewing, which is the biggest reason it lost to Essenza Mini.

Nespresso Essenza Mini vs Citiz: Differences
Delonghi Nespresso Essenza Mini wins 2-1 against Citiz. The truth is the espresso flavor, and overall performance of these devices are very alike. There are only some very minor details about Citiz that aren’t as good as Essenza Mini.
Espresso flavor
Winner: Delonghi Nespresso Essenza Mini
The two do an amazing job of extracting espresso from the capsules using a 19-bar pump mechanism. The taste is similar in terms of robustness, balance, and smoothness. So there are no noticeable differences between them in this matter. Nevertheless, Delonghi Essenza Mini provides a fuller-bodied consistency than Citiz. However, the crema quality is essentially similar.
The thing is, the pressure work of both devices is great, but Citiz seems to struggle more after the valve releases pressure. Citiz tends to leak a bit more water after brewing espresso, so it’s slightly messier. But it’s not too severe that it ruins my experience with the device.
Utilities
Winner: Delonghi Nespresso CitiZ
A 2-tier drip tray for the Nespresso CitiZ from De’Longhi is included and can be adjusted for various cup heights. With the top tray, users can flip it up so that the bottom tray can be functional and assist taller cups. This is the element that Essenza Mini is missing.
A convenient that both models feature is the Eco mode that, after three minutes, places the device in an idle condition. Essenza Mini automatically switches off in order to conserve energy if you don’t extract any more coffee for 6 minutes after the 3 minutes of idle time. In other words, the pair rests after 3 minutes of no brewing and shuts off after 9.
Design & Material
Winner: Delonghi Nespresso Essenza Mini
Both models are incredibly small and perfect for studio dwellings. Citiz and Essenza Mini are great options if you enjoy coffee but don’t consume it frequently. Since Essenza Mini is a little bit smaller, Essenza is the ideal option if you want an extra-compact Nespresso machine. The device is perfect for couples who wish for convenience and compactness.
These devices are made of plastic, making them incredibly portable. Because they are stronger and less prone to breakage, I prefer gadgets with metal or stainless steel frames and chambers. However, these machines’ durable plastic can withstand damage well and is more lightweight than any metal.
Nespresso Essenza Mini vs Citiz: Similarities
Delonghi Nespresso Essenza Mini and Citiz share more similarities than differences since they strictly follow Nespresso machines’ design guidelines. But there are only 2 major differences that I want to highlight. Check them out below!
Good Heating element’s performance
In its Nespresso product lines, Delonghi generally uses a Thermoblock heating mechanism. My experience has shown that Thermoblock can quickly reach the proper brewing temperature for water, and the method is ideal for compact, inexpensive espresso makers.
The actual operation stays fairly close to the truth. For me, the system is incredibly effective. Heat-up takes only 25 seconds, and brewing takes a further 12 to 35 seconds (I count the brewing time personally).
Easy cleaning
Nespresso machines are genuinely straightforward and quick, so cleaning them isn’t half as complicated as with espresso machines. To clean Citiz and Essenza Mini, all we have to do is place a cleaning capsule in the slot that we normally put coffee capsules in and hit the espresso or lungo button, depending on how much water you want to run through the brew path.
As for descaling, it’s even easier. The devices require that we mix water with a pack of descaling liquid in the reservoir. And to start the descaling process:
- Step 1: Clear the machines from any leftover capsules in the capsule slot and the used capsule containers, then put the water tank with the descaling concoction in its place
- Step 2: Start the machine and put a big container under the group head/ spout
- Step 3: Press and hold the espresso and lungo buttons simultaneously until they start to blink
- Step 4: Choose the lungo button to start the descaling
- Step 5: Use the descaling water in the container to refill the tank, and press the lung button again to re-descale the devices
- Step 6: Press and hold the espresso and lungo button simultaneously for at least 7 seconds until they restore to the original state. Then you can start brewing espresso again without any problem. Remember to switch off the descaling mode, or your machine won’t brew properly.
