What makes a good espresso machine? Maybe the debate of Philips 3200 vs Delonghi Magnifica XS will give you a clearer view of what might be an ideal machine for you. After testing these models, I find Philips 3200 to have a more stable operation from grinding beans to dispensing espresso.

The winner Philips 3200 constantly delivers delicious espresso with a mellow flavor and heavy mouthfeel. Philips designed this model with a compact design and a frontal water tank for easy removal and cleaning. I’m truly impressed by the constancy through many brewing sessions regarding temperature performance. If you are looking for a convenient entry-level model that still offers hands-on experience, I wouldn’t recommend any other model than Philips 3200.

The milk foam quality is a significant selling factor for the Delonghi Magnifica XS because it works well for lattes and cappuccinos. Unfortunately, the improper feeding of beans into the grinding well causes an inconsistent brewing experience for me.

Philips 3200 vs Delonghi Magnifica XS: Differences

There are 4 major differences between Philips 3200 and Delonghi Magnifica XS, and the former wins

Grinder Stability and operation

Winner: Philips 3200

Like what expect from any decent espresso machine grinder, Philips 3200’s bulti-in grinder is powerful and consistent. I have never experienced jamming with this model. And judging from the ground texture of the discarded coffee puck, I can tell that it does a great job at ensuring that the coffee beans are ground evenly before the brewing step.

As for Delonghi Magnifica XS, I’m quite disappointed in how it turns out. I expect a potent grinder that delivers fine and even ground brews after brews for a machine of its price. Unfortunately, the grinder and the bean hopper ensemble have been very faulty for me. Magnifica XS doesn’t feed beans from the hopper to the grinder in the right amount, so the dosing is extremely off sometimes.

Do I think this is a generational error for the Magnifica XS product line? No. Does the faulty grinder bug me more frequently than I anticipated? Yes. Ultimately, I had to return the machine for further inspecting and fixing. And now, it does work better than it did in the third month since I started using the device.

Number of programmable drinks

Winner: Philips 3200

Regarding the number of programmable drinks, Philips 3200 offers 9, including double quantities of the original recipes and hot water. The recipes are espresso, lungo, coffee, Americano, and hot water for teas or hot chocolate of your choice. As for Delonghi Magnifica XS, we can only make classic espresso or lungo.

Both machines don’t offer milk-based one-touch beverages like a flat white, cappuccino, or latte. So it depends totally on the milk wand. For me, I don’t see this as a defect, especially for Philips 3200 because of its affordable price.

Milk foam texture

Winner: Delonghi Magnifica XS

Delonghi Magnifica XS has a more potent steam wand than Philips 3200. I have tested the milk foam texture that they deliver after the same amount of time that I handle the milk pitcher, which is around 50 seconds. Magnifica XS does a notably better job. The milk foam is airier and perfect for cappuccinos and lattes. On the other hand, with Philips 3200, I can get steamed milk with a creamy and thick texture but not much foam.

So, I recommend Philips 3200 if you like flat white, mocha, or latte. As for Delonghi Magnifica, its steam wand will make the perfect cappuccino, latte, or latte macchiato.

Espresso extraction and flavor

Winner: Philips 3200

Flavor-wise, Philips 3200 wins the round without any doubt. Due to the faulty dosing problem of Delonghi Magnifica XS, I have failed many times trying to pull a rich and refreshing cup of coffee with balanced notes of flavor. I tried all the one-touch recipes it offers, and I’m satisfied with them, especially with the americano. With a cup of Americano and one small bag of sugar, I can sip through a coof iced cup with great pleasure.

Delonghi Magnifica XS has good days and bad days. On good days, I enjoy the espresso flavor. It’s mellow and very refreshing. But, consistency is always the key to a good espresso machine in the long run, and I had to get the machine fixed to achieve said consistency.

Philips 3200 vs Delonghi Magnifica XS: Similarities

Check out these 4 major similarities between Philips 3200 and Delonghi Magnifica XS that I believe have an impact on your barista experience.

Adjustable coffee strength

In other words, you can control the dose of each brewing session with a touch of the screen or s twist of the dial. You can decide the strength of each cup of espresso that Philips 3200 and Delonghi Magnifica XS extract.

Cleaning and descaling notice

On the main display of both devices, there is an exclusive light indicator that tells users when it’s time to clean or descale the machine. For me, such convenience is always appreciated, especially when you are as forgetful as I am when it comes to keeping up with the schedule.

Auto-purge feature

Auto-purge is another important feature that I want to highlight. After each time that we steam milk, there will be left-over milk inside of the wand that can easily go off and affect the smell of the milk in future brewing, besides bacteria formation and other major health issues.

With Philips 3200 and Delonghi Magnifica XS, the systems will automatically purge. For Philips 3200, the machine purges when I turn it off or on. As for Delonghi Magnifica XS, it will purge its system when you switch from steam to dispenser.

Quiet operation

From certain points of view, this pair is fairly quiet. Of course, we can’t expect a grinder-integrated espresso machine to be as silent as the grave. Still, for espresso machines’ standard, I enjoy the noise level that these machines produce when grinding whole beans and applying pressure to make espresso.
